Lung cancer – the most diagnosed cancer globally and the leading cause of death due to cancer.
Last Autumn UICC produced an article looking at lung cancer and the possibilities for reducing mortality rates with prevention and early detection.
Lung cancer, which affects both men and women, is the most diagnosed cancer globally and the leading cause of death due to cancer. While diagnosis and mortality rates are highest in the world’s highest income countries, these countries are starting to see declining numbers of new cases and new cases due to a reduction in tobacco use and advances in / access to treatment. Other risk factors such as air pollution, asbestos and other occupational carcinogens can all be reduced with the implementation of public health policies.
As with other cancers, early diagnosis of lung cancer significantly improves five year survival rates. Compared to other cancers however, the adoption of lung cancer screening programmes has been slow and take up low.

Lung Cancer Awareness Month and the UICC

Lung Cancer Awareness Month (LCAM) was launched in the early 2000s by the Alliance for Lung Cancer Advocacy, Support and Education (now GO2 for Lung Cancer). It has since grown into a global movement. UICC supports LCAM.
Towards a national lung cancer screening programme in France
In May 2026 France launched a pilot lung cancer screening programme in five areas of the country : Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Hauts-de-France, Île-de-France, Pays de la Loire and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. The pilot, called Impulsion, is aimed at smokers and ex-smokers between 50 and 74. The objectives of the study are twofold; to increase rates of early diagnosis and to determine the conditions for the implementation of a future national screening programme for this cancer.
