What is a Cancer Support France Active Listener?
An Active Listener is a volunteer who has undergone nationally approved training by Cancer Support France. This enables them to provide emotional support to English speakers in France touched by cancer – whether that’s as a patient, family member, carer or close friend.
Active Listeners provide a confidential one to one listening service, using their skills to put people at ease so that they feel able to discuss their issues and concerns, however daunting these may feel.
Our Active Listeners communicate in different ways with the people they support, respecting boundaries and confidentiality depending on what both parties are comfortable with. It may be by telephone, email, WhatsApp or secure messaging services. If required, and practical, it may be face to face.
While they are unable to provide medical or financial advice, Cancer Support France Active Listeners may be able to signpost the people they are supporting (the client) to trusted, reliable sources of information. Being non-judgemental and attentive to the client’s feelings, they can empower the client to resolve issues arising from their situation.
Some of our Active Listeners speak fluent French, and are able to provide language support, for example accompanying someone to a medical appointment, helping them to feel supported to ask questions.
Our Active Listening and language support services are provided free of charge; every interaction is treated as private and confidential. All our Active Listeners adhere to the Cancer Support France code of confidentiality and privacy guidelines.
